The users can look over their laptop’s outline border and easily find that there are ports of USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 on them. Most of the old ports which were there on the older laptop devices including the standard port USB, network interface, SD card slot, HDMI port, and charging port have been discarded by most of the laptop manufacturers.
The ditching of the USB & other such laptop ports was pushed by the first transition of Apple. In the year 2016, Apple replaced the standard port of USB with USB-C for MacBook Pro. It’s been keeping the next line-up of Mac devices & many other laptop giants did the same.
What is USB-C?
USB Type-C or USB-C is a standard port or connector that was created by the Implementers Forum of USB. The connector belongs to USB 3.1 which is the next-gen interface of USB 3.0. It became popular after being supported as well as applied by Microsoft, Google, Intel, and of course Apple.
USB ports only support one-sided insertion. But USB Type-C is reversible, both the front &back sides are capable of being plugged in. This Omnidirectional design is very convenient for the users since they can connect to the laptops with this every time. It is also powered with features like an oval-shaped design and it can support faster power and data transmission.
Why did Apple remove USB ports?
There are numerous other reasons for Apple & other big companies to remove ordinary USB ports and switch to USB-C ports. The main reason lies in the new possibilities and features of the USB-C port that make it extra powerful on laptops as compared to the standard USB port.
Benefits of using USB-C port
As compared to the old USB port which is heavier and thicker, the New port of USB-C is way thinner in thickness & smaller in size. It is only one-third of the standard USB port.
Moreover, due to its reversible and slim design, the ports of USB-C support handling videos, data, and power on single cables &allow an arbitrary-side connection. Simply put, the Type-C ports cater to making simpler, lighter, and slimmer laptops.
Transmitting speed and fast charging
USB Type-C ports belong to the standards of USB 3.1 which enables it to handle video and data transmission at the fast speed of 10 Gbps. For power transmission, USB-C supports up to almost 100w power transferring. This feature makes it the primary option of Port for fast charging. The Port of Thunderbolt 3, a technology that uses USB-C for connections and cabling on many Mac line-ups of Apple, allows up to almost 40 Gbps speed of transmission.
For all the above reasons and many more, Apple decided to get rid of the old USB port. Nowadays, USB-C port is becoming the new standard of connectivity among users. It fulfills the needs of the users and is gaining more popularity.
